Downtown Chicago as seen from Lincoln Park
Downtown Chicago as seen from Lincoln Park

Chicago, a city renowned for its iconic skyline and diverse neighborhoods. Beyond the tourist hotspots in The Loop are neighborhoods like Wicker Park, Lincoln Park, Wrigleyville, and Uptown. The first time I visited Chicago, I found myself pretty much never leaving “The Loop.” However, the next couple times I have been back I have found myself almost never in The Loop, and loving it even more than before.

Wicker Park: vibrant Bohemia

Wicker Park view of Downtown
Looking towards downtown and Sears Tower near Wicker Park
  1. Iron Age Korean Steakhouse: There are plenty of fantastic restaurants in Wicker Park. I chose to highlight this one simply because I am a sucker for good Korean BBQ. Iron Age is one of the best out there (worth noting that this is not a local Chicago mainstay).
  2. Una Mae’s: Located near numerous other shops, you’ll find Una Mae’s seamlessly blending vintage finds with contemporary fashion. The stores in Wicker Park were pretty much all fashionable, I was drawn to this one for it’s cozy aesthetics that were reflected in the clothes they sold.
  3. Myopic Books, Literary Oasis in Wicker Park: This place was awesome for bookworms. Shelves and shelves of books compiled somewhat haphazardly invite you in and give it a vintage charm.
  4. Ivy Hall Sensory Dispensary: If you’re looking to take advantage of Illinois’ legalization of Marijuana, this is a very inviting place to do it. I ventured in with my friends who were looking to do just that. We found that the staff were very friendly, and the vibes were very relaxed and upscale.

Lincoln Park: Nature, Cuisine, and Nightlife

Lincoln Park
Classic architecture like this is very common in Lincoln Park
  1. Lakefront Restaurant: Lakefront Restaurant in Lincoln Park, overlooking Lake Michigan, is a great place to grab some lunch or dinner. We happened to go for lunch, and their Cheeseburger was one of the best I have had in a long time. They had a pretty standard menu that most people would easily find something on. The atmosphere is really what makes the place, however.
  2. Lincoln Park Zoo: This was a great zoo, located in a very nice city park. The park feels somewhat isolated from the city, even though you can still see the skyline from many points in the park. I should also mention that the zoo is free, and chock full of Christmas lights during the holidays. Well worth the trip and one of my favorite zoos I have been to.
  3. Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool Find serenity at the Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool, a hidden oasis of landscape architecture in Lincoln Park, providing a peaceful retreat.
  4. North Avenue Beach: Lakeside Relaxation Immerse yourself in the sun, sand, and skyline views at North Avenue Beach for a perfect lakeside retreat.
  5. Lincoln Park Nightlife: As the sun sets, embrace the laid-back nightlife in Lincoln Park. McGee’s Tavern & Grill, Halligan Bar, Sheffield’s Beer and Wine Garden, and The Lion Head Pub offer a mix of experiences, attracting DePaul University students and locals alike.
  6. Pequod’s Pizza: Personally, this is my favorite pizza place that I have been to in Chicago. Make sure to book a reservation, as it fills up quite quickly for dinner. Once you order the pizza, you’ll understand why pretty quickly.

Wrigleyville: Baseball and Electric Atmosphere

  1. Wrigley Field: Iconic Baseball Experience Immerse yourself in baseball history at Wrigley Field, home to the Chicago Cubs. Catch a game and soak in the lively atmosphere.
  2. Sluggers World Class Sports Bar: Sluggers is a good place to hang out or watch games. The batting cages, dueling pianos, and arcade games make for a unique and lively atmosphere.
  3. Wrigleyville Rooftops: Opt for Wrigleyville rooftops for a unique view of the game. Several buildings offer unobstructed views of the field.

Uptown: Community vibes complete with Lakeside Escapes

Uptown Chicago
  1. Montrose Harbor: Peaceful Lakeside Retreat Escape the city hustle at Montrose Harbor, offering a peaceful retreat along the lakefront with scenic views and a calming ambiance.
  2. Montrose Beach: Sandy Shoreline Haven Enjoy a sandy escape at Montrose Beach, providing sunbathing, swimming, and beach picnics along Lake Michigan’s shoreline. Beware, it can get pretty busy on a nice hot summer day.
  3. The Magic Hedge: Birdwatcher’s Paradise Nature enthusiasts will appreciate The Magic Hedge at Montrose Point, a birdwatcher’s paradise with diverse avian species to observe.

Chicago’s neighborhoods, each with its unique charm, are numerous and unique. From the bohemian chic of Wicker Park to the academic and culinary delights of Lincoln Park, the electric atmosphere of Wrigleyville, and the tranquil escapes of uptown, explore the Chicago that many locals experience every day.
